Christine M. Comstock, PhD
Psychology Assistant
Supervised by Paul Becker, PhD

Welcome.

My PhD is in Clinical Psychology. I have been at Horizons for over two decades – a fact which I sometimes find amazing. My work is supervised by Paul Becker, PhD, who shares my commitment to therapy and clients. Before I worked at Horizons, I worked in the field of prevention and treatment of child abuse and neglect – physical abuse, emotional abuse and/or sexual abuse. I worked with families, groups, adults and children usually in group settings. Over the years, I have written or co-written several articles and chapters, a book and a parenting – nurturing program. While at Horizons, I have written articles, books and chapters of books about child abuse, parenting, countertransference, hypnosis, treatment of dissociation, links between spirituality and psychology, flashbacks and management of chronic pain and catastrophic illness. My research work for my dissertation was comparing scores of spiritualist mediums to scores of psychics and to scores of “ordinary” people. I used the Rorschach Ink Blot Test. I have continued to be interested in the body, mind and spirit.

I have enjoyed working with individuals and couples. I have worked for long or short periods of time with people who have experienced or are experiencing:

Situational stress
Catastrophic illness
Present problems following childhood trauma
Adult trauma
Couples experiencing developmental stress, couples who have had affairs
Anxiety, depression
Chronic pain
Life changes

I do believe that with each challenge, there is an opportunity to grow and to come through the situation better than when you went into it. I also know there are times when that statement I just made could seem annoying and aggravatingly simplistic. Psychotherapy can be an invaluable aid at difficult times. With help, you can have better support to explore your feelings, your patterns and your hopes. As we work to bring into conscious awareness the underlying forces and patterns that have shaped and influenced you, you can become more aware of some reasons you react in the ways you do today. As you deepen your awareness of yourself, you are able to move past old stuck places and your own healthy and natural development can proceed. Increased self-esteem, confidence and openness usually occur as you move through this process.

Connection and relationships are crucial to psychological health. I understand that a good working therapeutic relationship including trust, openness and collaboration is essential to a positive therapeutic outcome. My intent is to work in that way with you. My goal would to help you optimize your happiness and encourage your positive growth.
